Disapprove prosthetics for veterans?

Who in their right mind would vote to disapprove prosthetics for wounded veterans? My God, the people who want to continue to send our people to war (Republicans generally) do not want to provide every available medical benefit and device available to help them when they return?

Sean Hannity (radio and TV host), who is annoying to no end, calls liberals anti-American. What is more American than supporting our troups when they get home?

The Kiss of Death – CREW
… no incumbent is a more worthy target of voter ire than Richard Pombo. While promoting Bush’s foreign policy disaster in Iraq, Pombo voted to cut $1.8 billion in benefits to veterans. He also cast the deciding vote in the House against funding for prosthetics for wounded veterans — including soldiers coming home from Iraq who have lost limbs caused by roadside bombs.

Sticks and Stones

Most people don’t even know what Fascism is, so they souldn’t use the word.

Ackerman even get’s it right about the egozone…er I mean the erogenous zone of the Coulter Republicans…er I mean the neocons.

The Plank
“Islamofascism” merely strokes an erogenous zone of the right wing, which gains pleasure from a juvenile reductio ad Hitlerum with the enemies of the U.S.

fearblogging

This quote is laugh out loud funny. Read his whole post for the context.

TBogg -
It’s not that Ace isn’t a brave man (bear with me, I’m entering my “fictive universe” here and God knows where this will take us) I think he’s just one of those quick-on-the-trigger deciders; a man of action.

For example, say you’re going to go fishing with some friends on a lake and just after you push off from the dock, the motor dies. While you or I might attempt to restart the motor or get the oars out to keep the boat from colliding with the dock or another boat, Ace would immediately start eyeballing his companions and identifying the weakest one for the orgy of shipboard cannibalism that is sure to come. Oh Orrin!

I read things like the statement Orrin Hatch made and just wonder if they think we are -all- stupid. Did politicians say during WWII that if the other party wins it is a win for Hitler? I dunno, I wasn’t there – too young. Note to self – find book about politics during WWII. I am pretty damn sure almost every American supported our involvement in WWII.

Oh OrrinSalt Lake Tribune – Hatch says Demo win could help terrorists
“Fear is a very powerful emotion,” said Brigham Young University political scientist Kelly Patterson. “It is a powerful motivator. It is something that people understand and therefore politicians use it.”

a TSA cop might pull an Arab?

Of course we are using racial profiling at the airport. We would be crazy not to. If we pull grandma out of line at the airport or mom and her baby carriage along the way – so be it – we all deal with it.

The problem is, and always has been, if we -only- target young Arab men. “Mules” have been used to smuggle drugs into this country for a long time – as in young women who have swallowed little plastic bags of drugs – do we really think some poor, in love, possibly a believer in “the cause” could not be duped, coerced or paid to doing something similar for extremists? Just a thought.

It is a false notion that we choose “nice” over security for our country. The fact that this Jonah person chooses to obsess over a perceived stupidity of frisking grandma instead of Arab men misses the point of catching the bad guys. We do not know who is carrying the weapon that could down an airplane. He also misses the mark in another way – of course Arab or Arab looking people will be pulled aside often and of course it is in the “profile” of persons who are of interest. It is naive to think otherwise.

And by the way – what is so wrong about America doing things a better way? Our country has a racist blot on our record and it is to our credit that we strive to try and not repeat the mistake of classifying people by their race alone.

Jonah Goldberg on Airport Security on National Review Online
In other words, while our enemies are coming up with ingenious ways to murder Americans, we’re coming up with ingenious ways to search for our enemies in the nicest manner possible. No amount of training, it seems, can immunize against the real threat to America: the possibility that somewhere, at some time, a TSA cop might pull an Arab or South Asian out of a line at an airport unfairly and talk to them for five minutes.

Bill & Melinda get it

“…If you oppose the distribution of condoms, something is more important to you than saving lives.” [emphasis mine]
Read the whole thing here:

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Gates criticises HIV abstinence policies

I guess the Gates’ refrain from getting into political squables usually, but this comment seems to put them squarely against the current neo-con philosophy of “abstinence only” education.

and:

“We need tools that will allow women to protect themselves,” said Mr. Gates. “This is true whether the woman is a faithful married mother of small children, or a sex worker trying to scrape out a living in a slum. No matter where she lives, who she is, or what she does – a woman should never need her partner’s permission to save her own life.”

Nasty Cheney

David Corn at The Nation:

But what a nasty shot from Cheney. Neither he nor Bush seem to realize that even though they are GOP partisans they are still president and the vice president of the entire nation and actually have a higher standard to meet than the usual political hacks (including those in their own employ). [emphasis mine]
